Downton Abbey: The Effects of War

This post is late because I had a dvr snafu, and Downton Abbey wasn't recorded.  I had to watch it online, which I basically need to donate to PBS because it was refreshing not to have a commercial every 5 seconds.

So we have Downton Abbey significantly affected by the war, with both William and Matthew being injured in the war.  William has become the angelic figure who protects Matthew during a battle, and all he wants to do is marry Daisy.  Daisy is portrayed as simple, and yet she does have a good argument for what is right.  But in war and in life the line between right and wrong becomes very blurred.  I also think if Daisy was given more credit she wouldn't be so simple.  For instance, when she is told not to read because she'll strain her eyes.  If she had the chance to learn more and read, she might be able to see why marrying William is not wrong.  It is providing comfort to a dying man.

We also see how much Lavinia loves Matthew, she would marry him even though he could not bear children.  Mary would not do that, again Matthew becomes not good enough for Mary; even though he is all that she wants.

Mary also tries to protect the house and its servants by telling her fiance Richard about his indiscretion with the Turkish ambassador.  I think this is going to be used as leverage for Richard to get more and take more from the Granthams than Mary realizes.

Well I am looking forward to next week and to see how each storyline progresses.  On a last note, how romantic are Sybil and Branson?  His arguments have been getting better and better, they need to make out already.

SAG Award Winners

This post is late, but I have been a busy lady.  Good thing about the SAG awards it means we have an Oscar race for Best Actress, Best Actor, and Best Picture.  It's not necessarily a lock for George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Michelle Williams, or The Descendants and The Artist.

Can't wait for the Oscars!!

On the tv end of it all, I have given up on rewards shows.  They continue to seek legitimacy when they are actually doing some of the most real story telling out there.  Texas forever!

The SAG awards are the best time to be in LA.  The mingling of all the stars both tv and movies.  The awards also recognize the work of the actors, so many shows get recognized that usually do not get the recognition.  I will do a short write up after the awards.

Parks and Recreation: Bowling for Votes

Leslie Knope's campaign has brought her back to the annoying parts of the character that are grating and so hard to watch.  She redeemed herself in the end after Ben punched that stupid guy.  But what kind of message is that saying about campaigning for Leslie as a woman?

April and Tom were the highlights of the show tonight.  I always love April's commentary (I think she's a wizard in real life). They really play to Aubry Plaza's strengths when they write for April to do voices and deadpan humor.

I think Tom is one of my favorite characters on tv. He's so lovable, but he would be so annoying in real life.  His innocence and naivete make him redeemable.  Also, did anyone else get the Drive reference with Tom's scorpion jacket?  Again, Parks and Rec always gets the little details so right. It is so something like Tom would buy and wear.

Also, see Drive, it's amazing Ryan Gosling and Carey Mulligan, the story is so intense.  The music is great. Just do it!

Downton Abbey: For the Love of Maggie Smith

I was on youtube looking something else up, not related to Downton Abbey, and this video came up. I had to share.

Random: Fairy Tales

I didn't realize Revenge was a repeat tonight, and with the State of the Union address last night that would mean two days without posts from me.  I didn't want to blog about the State of the Union, and I didn't want to leave you without a post from me for two whole days.  So I decided to write about a hypothesis of mine.

If you are friends with me, you know that I come up with theories whether right or wrong; and I usually have some real reasons for my theories.  Below is my hypothesis for the emergence of fairy tales series on television.

Grimm and Once Upon a Time were both greenlit and premiered this past fall.  During the summer in anticipation for these series, there was a lot of chatter about how the series would fair? Why fairy tale shows were being produced?  Was there an audience for them? Would they fit in with a network's brand?

Many reviewers and commentators easily surmised that given the economic climate and the current state of the world, fairy tales were form of escapism.  People just wanted to escape to fantasy land to avoid the problems of the real world in which they live.  I do not dismiss this theory, and I thought the same thing, originally.

But some reviewers were arguing against this theory, and they wanted to evaluate the shows based on merit.  However, it had me thinking.  If people do not watch fairy tales for escapism, why do they watch them? So my hypothesis is that fairy tales have an audience because there is an easily identifiable villain.  In fairy tales, there's the big bad wolf, the evil queen, the evil step sister, overbearing lord, etc.  Given the current societal woes, i.e. bullying has gotten out of hand; and on reality television you have people openly and actively brutalizing each other as well as themselves. You also has terrorism which has plagued the lives of Americans since 9/11, it has seeped into the consciousness as an elusive villain that is also a difficult to identify.

I guess fairy tales are easy to define, especially good versus evil.  I think people are looking for good story telling with easily identifiable characters and motives because in real life the villains and evilness are becoming less and less recognizable.

Bachelor: Gone Fishin'

The most exciting thing about Ben as the Bachelor is the fact that he is a winemaker.  I don't know how so many of the women have fallen for him.

Emily who likes him a lot tried to tell him how Courtney is a heartless statue.  I think every Bachelor season there is a person who shows two sides, one to the house and one to the Bachelor or Bachelorette. And there is always a different person ready to run to the Bachelor and tell him about the two faced competition.  It just makes for great television.  What isn't better television than a model getting all of the Bachelor's attention and all the women in the house hating her?  It's great for middle America who watches this show religiously.  Another of my favorites is when the person isn't there for the "right reasons."  Because finding love on television is obviously the right place to find it.

Well I was shocked Monica lasted as long as she did, and I am glad Courtney caught a fish because it is exactly like catching a man. Oh, and she's good at that too.  I see Ben and her lasting a full 2 months after the engagement at the end of the season.

Downton Abbey: Smoking Hot

This past Sunday's episode had a lot of action nearly every character had something to do with the episode.  You have Daisy worried about William's return and by proxy Matthew's return as well.  Lady Cora and Cousin Isobel fighting over the management of the convalescent home that leaves Isobel's only choice is to fill a need elsewhere in France.

This episode also showed the dichotomy of the servers versus the Crawley family.  The Crawleys were hesitant to open their home to soldier during World War II.  And Mary is complaining about singing a song for the concert to entertain the soldiers.  Then you have the servants doing anything for soldiers; giving up their time and salary to start a soup kitchen for the unemployed and injured veterans of the war.

Now, I do consider Lord Grantham a good person, he hunts down Bates because he cares for him. The Crawleys are a nice noble family while altruistic, they are not as selfless as their servers who have less but give more, with the exception of O'Brien and Thomas.  (Side note: Thomas makes smoking a cigarette look so enjoyable, this non-smoker even wants one.)  Lady Cora does have a high moment when she insists the soup kitchen continues, but with the use of the house's money.  O'Brien's face when Lady Cora joins in on serving the veterans was priceless.

Lady Sybil may be my favorite sister, and I do like the romance that is unfolding between Branson and her.  Another dichotomy between the servants and the nobility, where Branson thinks "the rest is detail" when it comes to the two different worlds they live in.  The hopeless romantic in me looooooved that line.

Granted a lot happened in the episode, but I'll leave you with my favorite moment of the series.  I was so happy to watch it.  This series is great because of the emotion it creates in the viewer.

Once Upon a Time: Snow White

After a great weekend with friends in Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, I am behind on my tv.  But I hope it'll be business as usual as soon as I get caught up.

So last week's episode about Hansel and Gretel was very good.  Once Upon a Time has definitely hit a rhythm.  The episodes are a little formulaic, and yet they remain entertaining.  I think this week's episode about Snow White is what we have been waiting to see, well at least what I have been waiting to see.  Her story and the love story is definitely a reason for why I watch.  This blog consistently points out to me that I am a hopeless romantic.

In Storybrook we get to see Mary Margaret and David admit their true feelings for each other, and yet we have Mary Margaret still trying to do the right thing and have David uphold his choice to stay in his marriage. I understand what she is trying to do, between two options there is a right and a wrong choice.  On the fairy tale side, Snow White complies with the King's ultimatum and lies to James about her love for him to save his life.

I liked the addition of the 8th dwarf, Stealth.  I also like Grumpy's cheesy speech, he's right about living with the emotions, good and bad.  And it broke my heart when she took the vile, but I got the kiss I have been hoping to see in Storybrook, since the start of this show.

Parks And Rec: Insurance?

Andy may be my favorite next to Ron Swanson on P&R.  When Andy sneezes, I could see him actually hitting his head.  Also, he was standing on a rolling chair, which was priceless.  It's those details that make this show.  Andy's and April's attempt to dine and dash into an ambulance was amazing.

I liked the introduction of Paul Rudd, his character is the best counterpoint to Leslie Knope.  Bobby Newport as an overgrown man/boy who thought running for office would be easier than growing up.  Is that allegorical to politicians?

So Maureen Ryan of the Huffington Post brought up a bigger question, is Leslie corrupt?  All the things she does: the parties, using government employees for her campaign, isn't this corruption?  Would you vote for her?

Below I posted a video of my favorite interview ever.  Sometimes when I am down, I watch it and instantly feel better.

Happy Friday everyone!

Revenge: Commitments

I didn't want to get sucked into Revenge.  I truly didn't need to add in another show to my already taxing schedule.  Even right now, I am trying to figure out how to fit in all the movies for the award shows, tv, reading, and a social life.  I want to write more robust reviews for you guys.  I am doing all for the love of entertainment and my blog readers.

So my friend got me into Revenge, after catching up from the first 3 episodes I was hooked.  While I was out with my 22 year old cousins over the holidays, we saw my friend; and then we got my cousin hooked.  My cousin has NEVER watched script tv shows.  Could you imagine?  I remember growing up when everything was scripted.  Buffy, Dawson's, West Wing, Gilmore Girls, Popular.......my teenage years.

So what is Connie upto with offering to pay for Declan's school?  I think all Graysons have an ulterior motive. Oddly, I don't know if Daniel has an ulterior motive with Emily, does he really just want to get back at his dad?  Anyone at the age to be in graduate school would be past that? Right?  I mean my parents are divorced, I don't think I could do that.

Back to last week's post is Daniel that innocent?  Why am I not enjoying this version of Emily's revenge? Or getting engaged after a summer together? I agreed with the decision to pause the revenge for a bit.  And Amanda Clarke leaving, god was she annoying.  But here is why I watch this show, when you know how evil someone is they still surprise you with how low this will go. Victoria will do anything to maintain her lifestyle, and the love of her son.  The end when Daniel tells Emily his mother's accusations, it was a very nuanced reaction by Emily VanCamp, and it looks like her revenge is right back on track.

Parenthood: It is What It is

While writing this post, I totally debated on just making a Jason Katims label.  This man has the ability to create worlds that are relatable and you wish that was your world.  I never thought I would wish I grew up in a Californian family home or that I wish I went to high school in Dillon, TX.  These shows make me wish this, and that says a lot coming from a die-hard Northerner who never quite understands the obsession with California.

With the brood of Bravermans, there is a lot of story to cover in an hour.  It is always enjoyable to watch, and I feel invested in what happens to the characters.  I want them to fall in love, build stronger marriages, and make the right choices, but just like life, it doesn't always happen that way.

So we have Amber consistently being inadequate, even though she's supremely capable.  Anyone figure out where Bobby is from???? Yes, I looked it up. (That's why you read my blog right?)  The ill-fated Black Donnellys that was canceled after a few shows.  That show could have been great but lacked direction.  I wish they had more of a plan for Amber, the campaign with Kristina is just so not believable.

Dax Shepard is one of the most underrated actors on tv.  I like him with the cellist. Can she really play the cello in real life? I can't decide if I like her better than Jasmine.

Now onto Haddie, the situation and burden she carries as being the oldest child was perfectly acted.  Student loans are a subject close to my heart, I have a ton.  I think that Adam and Kristina are trying to do the right thing.  As a parent it is hard to say no, since she is going to be 18, isn't it her choice to take out the loans? and to choose a college where she can thrive?

This goes for Sarah and Drew, he is obviously growing, changing, developing dreams, I don't think that would be happening without his girlfriend and her family.  But I totally understand Sarah position as a single mom without a degree.  Since I was raised by a single mom who didn't go to college, and I understand how much Drew is pulling away from her, which is unfortunate but a little bit necessary.   Deep down, Drew wants to build the family life his girlfriend has.

Well I am interested to see what happens next week, this show is so great to watch; I do not understand its low ratings. I just really hope it is not the last season.

New Girl: We Built this Schmidty

I will never waste the opportunity to reference Starship.  I also love an ugly duckling transformation as much as I love a love triangle.  This episode of New Girl reminded me a lot of How I Met Your Mother. Maybe is was the flashbacks or singing in a car on a road trip?  The partying and friendship?

I am definitely loving Nick's new relationship, and the Cosby impressions weren't too bad either.  Benjamin reminded me of the guy who needs to be that guy and deserved to be hit. (I do not advocate violence.) The charcuterie reference was immensely pretentious and lovable.

Schmidt and Jess may be the best new couple on tv, they could help each other find themselves. I would fall for Schmidt's blue eyes too.  But will it actually happen?

Jessie Baylin: Little Spark

I thought I would include a music post today.  I found out about Jessie Baylin because she is married to the drummer, Nathan Followill, of Kings of Leon.  I would say that her style of music falls into what I like best about music, that is the singer/songwriter mellow side of music.  I haven't bought the full album yet.  But the trailer below makes me want to buy it.  I also have such respect for a woman that can pull off a quasi-mullet beautifully.

Bachelor: Skiing in Bikinis

At the beginning of the Bachelor, they start with a date where the two people have a fear of heights.  It's no wonder that Emily was chosen for the date. At least I can say I have never worried about peeing my pants when going on a date.  It's very trite of the producers to choose for a date, and obviously they have true love at the heart of the show and not ratings.

I am not going to lie, I didn't have two hours to commit to the Bachelor last night.  I only really watched the beginning and decided to turn on Downton Abbey, which aired the same time as the Golden Globes.  So I am behind on tv in general.  I also don't know anyone who has two hours to commit to a show as mindless as the Bachelor every Monday.  Regardless, for those of you who want to read about the Bachelor, I thought I would link to a Huffington Post article.

I promise to get caught up, and to have a better write up next week.

The Artist

I had the day off from work today, so I decided I should go see a movie.  I really wanted to see My Week with Marilyn.  But I chose to see The Artist instead.  This choice was based on times, and I would only be able to watch a silent film in a theater with no distractions.

The Artist definitely deserves the accolades that it has been receiving.  It is a very inventive way to tell a story in silent film form during this day and age where one has access to just about everything to tell a story.  The story was predictive and about love. Of course in this form the performances need to be top notch for the movie even to work.  Because it is a silent film, you become acutely aware as a viewer of the theater around you.  So I had a guy choking on candy next to me, and a few rows over too loud of laughers for a silent film.  Another observation of silent film is that it is a very disconnected way of storytelling.  There definitely was a wall where you cannot identify with the character or get invested in their story because it is a very two-dimensional portrayal of real life.

As a Hollywood observer, I would say this movie is getting praise because of the nostalgia for the art form of silent films and to have the skill to create a film like that today deserves to be praised.  Once I see all the films, I will comment if it deserved the Golden Globe.  I feel like after this award season it is easily forgettable, which is unfortunate.

Golden Globes: Winners 2012

Last night I watched the Golden Globes sipping Prosecco, eating Dove chocolate, and wearing J.Crew pajamas.  There's nothing better than J.Crew pajamas, so comfortable.  It was a "Treat Yo' Self" kind of night.

My favorite part of the red carpet was Sarah Michelle Gellar asking how Giuliana Rancic (a breast cancer survivor) was doing after her interview, which was inadvertently caught when the camera lingered too long.  Yes, Sarah Michelle Gellar's dress looked like her two year old picked it out, because she did.  But it was a bold choice and I like it as well as dislike it at the same time.  I did watch Ringer and gave up after awhile, but after seeing this sincere exchange.  I may start watching again.  I guess for the love of Buffy, and women caring about each other.

Many surprises from last night's Golden Globes, it was surprising how tame Ricky Gervais was.  His jokes involved a lot of people who were not in the room.  But I did love the easy beaver joke (which is just as fun to type LOL).  Anything making fun of Mel Gibson and Madonna is fine with me.  Even though Robert Downey Jr. would have been offended by those jokes too.  Little tidbit, Downey Jr. owes his comeback to Gibson because he paid the insurance on Downey's first movie post drug arrests.

Any way, back to the Globes, I was really happy for Homeland, the show deserves such praise.  I really want to see The Artist now.  I don't even know what to say about Laura Dern's and Matt LeBlanc's wins because I don't watch their shows.

As for fashions my favorite of the night were Jessica Chastain, Evan Rachel Wood, Kate Winslet, Zooey Deschanel (minus the side burn pieces), and Sofia Vergara.  I am a sucker for anything green, and I would looooove to wear something like Jessica Chastain.  It takes a long neck to pull it off.

Fringe: Back to Where You've Never Been

It is no secret that I am a J.J. Abrams fan.  Fringe fits into all the things I like about a show, a little mystery, intriguing and endearing characters, and a love story.  I totally didn't expect to find out by writing this blog that most of the shows I watch involve two people who can't be together, won't be together, and their quest for love. Peter and Olivia fit the bill to a T.

I also like the show because it is similar to the X-Files.  (I am going to admit it now, that I remember the first X-Files episode I watched in the fifth grade.  It was Darkness Falls, and I am still freaked out about ancient killer bugs released by logging.)

So this season will probably by Fringe's last, which is sad.  I wish it would get at least one more, five seasons is a good round number.  But the story is so complex now, there's no way it's going to gain new viewers who don't have time to watch all previous seasons.  The writing is superb though.  I am still watching and with all the other shows I need to watch that says a lot.

The end of Fringe this week was prolific.  In order for the universe to survive Olivia must die.  Would you rather the show end in tragedy or a happy ending?  As an English teacher lectured once, do you ever remember the happy ending?  Alas, I want Peter and Olivia to be together, no tragedy.

The Office: The Einsteins

All right pretty contradictory, I just said The Office is past its prime, and then I choose to write about the show. I really liked the episode tonight.  Maybe because I am a sucker for trivia?  Or that I am positive no one in Middle America or any one that supports Rick Santorum got the Grindr reference?  I also loved the usage of BJ Novak, always great when he has some screen time.  Kevin was a highlight too. Something I've been wondering since the first season, does Kevin have front teeth?  Please answer this for me blogosphere.

Lots of deep thoughts right now, considering the line up tonight; would Studio 60 fit in the 10 o'clock time frame? I absolutely looooooooooved Studio 60, but it didn't last.  Would it get greenlit today and any ratings five years later?

**I guess as a follow up to the NBC Line up post, they have shows to work with, but they need to be smarter about when they air them to build regular viewers.

NBC Thursday Night Line up

Originally, I was only going to write about Parks & Rec, but after NBC's Wednesday night Happy Hour of Whitney and Are you there, Chelsea? I have been thinking about NBC, and how badly the network is doing.  The glory days of Thursday night used to be Community, Parks &Rec, The Office, and 30 Rock.  That line up makes total sense.  All shows that I love, throwing Whitney in there didn't make sense.  I like Whitney, but the comedy isn't in the same vein as the others. Up All Night is a better fit, I even think that could work for Wednesday night's Happy Hour.

But the bigger question would be is The Office past its prime? (Sorry, Mindy!) If The Office wasn't renewed, we'd have Community on Thursday nights.  Community is tabled right now while NBC gets its act together.  Sadly, NBC can't get rid of The Office if it wanted to because of the fan base.

Way to go NBC, I hope you are getting comfortable in 4th place for the next few years until you stop greenlighting shows like The Firm.  Who thought that was a good idea? I was in grade school when that movie came out, and even younger when the book was first published, what demographic are you trying to get? Apparently not mine.

Revenge: Talented Mr. Ripley?

From last week's episode, Tyler self-destructed which Emily Thorne used to her advantage in tying up some lose ends like Frank's wallet as well as his death.  The writers said they wanted Tyler's character to be like The Talented Mr. Ripley.  Anyone remember that movie?  It starred all gorgeous actors, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jude Law, and Matt Damon.  It was beautifully shot, and I remember being so disturbed by it that I didn't care to see it again.  I wonder if a movie like that would get made today in the age of remakes/reboots, sequels, and comic books brought to film.

Anyway after a quick movie rant, back to Revenge.  I wasn't surprised by Tyler's demise.  Granted I love Emily's revenge and seeing her enact revenge every week is great and instantly gratifying.  But wouldn't you say Jack and Daniel are innocents in this and she's ultimately hurting them too?  How great is revenge if you hurt the one person you care about?   We are also shown how corrupt the Graysons really are. So is Daniel that innocent?  One thing for sure, Victoria Grayson deserves her comeuppance, I wonder how Emily is going to handle Charlotte as her half sister.  That's one way to ensure Connie gets everything in the divorce.

On a final note, did Treadwell remind anyone of Prof. Plum from Clue?  If they remake that movie, he's my casting choice.

Are You There, Chelsea?

I have read all of Chelsea Handler's books.  I always liked Whitney Cummings on Chelsea Lately, but I am not necessarily loving Whitney.  I do like 2 Broke Girls, but that it is not a great show; it is just entertaining.

So what do I think of Are You There, Chelsea? It seems like it'll be entertaining.  But I don't know if I liked it enough to tune in every week.

Like Crazy: Felicity Jones

As much as this is a tv blog, I am going to write about movies, books, music, and whatever I feel like.

So I saw Like Crazy back in the fall.  It was a great movie. Felicity Jones and Anton Yelchin carry the entire film.  Granted one choice indicated the storyline, and it became a sticking point for many reviewers; but isn't that how life works?  Little choices somehow lead you down a path and you never realized that's where you'd end up.

Well Felicity Jones was honored by the National Board of Review for her Breakthrough Performance. It is totally deserving.

House of Lies: Pilot

I do not get Showtime unless I become obsessed with a show like I did with Homeland this past fall.  I totally recommend Homeland.

But I thought some of you would like to hear about House of Lies.  The pilot was shown on the 8th.  Duana at LaineyGossip reviewed it.  Duana is a Verionica Mars fan so she may be partial.  Either way I just thought I'd share.

Rock Center: GOP Race

To make up for blogging about the Bachelor, I wanted to comment on Rock Center.  I dvr it, and I watch it regularly.  I think it's a great program.  When it was first announced, I didn't think it would work on Monday night.  But Brian Williams has done a great of in depth reporting on relevant subjects. I am a happy viewer who feels more informed after watching it.

Bachelor: 18 Survivors?

When I originally conceived this blog a long time ago, I decided I wasn't going to write about reality tv.  But I had two friends (old college roommates) implore me to watch the Bachelor.  Granted I was not a fan of last season's Bachelorette, but I thought I would give it a shot.  I caught up yesterday with ABC's second airing of the premiere.  Smart move on their part to get viewers who were dubious like myself.

My take aways are that these women are crazy.  The drama of the first night was crazy! Fellow blogger Jenna Burke (The Over-Analyst) proved her namesake. She seems sweet, and I know she'll survive the embarrassment of great ratings for ABC.

Now on to the more intriguing, first time ever....a possible lesbian couple within the bachelorettes? Who knows? But it'll make for some stellar ratings. I also know that Bill Simmons, Dave Jacoby, and the Sports Gal are all over it.

As for the second episode, being a 28 year old single woman of course my dream man is a winemaker.  But I wouldn't go on national television to meet him, and I am not particularly attracted to Ben either.

Apparently, Sonoma, Southern women, a traumatizing fairy tale, the nickname of "jugs," and lots of swimming and/or crying make for Primetime television.

Anyone wonder how many cases of wine ABC producers stalked in the house?

And then there were 16...

Once Upon a Time: Desparate Souls

Fairy Tales just may be real in this small Maine town.  Since the death of the sheriff/huntsman, a replacement is needed. Emma Swan must run against Regina's (Evil Queen's) appointed candidate, who is Gus from Breaking Bad. (My mind is still blown from the finale this summer. Anyone else's?)

We are finally getting Rumpelstiltskin's (Mr. Gold's) background.  Robert Carlyle plays him beautifully. In his fairy tale, he is not the conniving man that he is portrayed as everywhere else.  He is a destitute coward who takes a chance to steal a dagger to gain power in his realm. This power transforms him into a monster who protects what is his at all costs.  Back in Storybrooke, Emma Swan stands up to Mr. Gold, playing right into his hand owing her sheriff's position to Mr. Gold's arson to make her look like a hero.

We only had a brief interaction between Margaret Mary (Snow White) and David Nolan (Prince Charming).  I just want them to get together.  What can I say I am a romantic? I watched two shows tonight that include "Will they or Won't they" couples.

I am looking forward to next week's Hansel and Gretel.  I always loved that story.

Downton Abbey: With or Without You

I am embarrassed to admit as an anglophile, it took all the buzz of Downton Abbey to get me to watch.  I am so glad that I did.  I basically watched Season 1 over the holidays, and I have been eagerly awaiting the start of Season 2.

At the open, we are quickly thrown into World War I trenches.  The war is in full force, and Downton Abbey has been affected by it. The theme of the second Season is change, and there is a lot of it to come.  Nearly every character mentions it.

Of course I am obsessed with the love story between Matthew and Mary, Matthew would inherit the title and estate since none of the Earl's daughters can inherit it under English law. Mary who is smart and strong, yet incredibly sensitive.  I truly hope the writers do not continue to keep them apart.  Downton Abbey has enough talent, fully formed characters, and story lines that the show can continue to be interesting after they are together.

Some of the high points in the show:
  • Branson confessing his feelings to Lady Sybil.  I have really enjoyed watching Lady Sybil continue to push the boundaries of gender roles.
  • Lady Mary giving her good luck charm to Matthew. It so funny when Lavinia Swire was introduced.  As a viewer I automatically didn't want to like her, and I thought the writers of the show gave her the last name of swine.
  • Any of the World War I scenes, the show really depicts the devastation and loss within the trenches.  I was not surprised by Thomas's actions at all.
  • Violet revealing one of their female ancestors loaded guns in a previous war.
I am looking forward to next week to see how the war continues to affect Downton Abbey and change the world as well as the character's lives.

Television! Teacher, mother, secret lover.

Hello!

After quoting Homer Simpson in the title, I thought a great place to start would be my favorite television shows of all time.  The earliest shows that I can remember watching are Golden Girls and Full House.  I think graduated to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Dawson's Creek, West Wing, and Gilmore Girls (which I still watch on a regular basis).  While I was in college, my roommates and I were obsessed with Lost, the Office, and Sex and the City.  I also spent this past summer watching all of Friday Night Lights, Alias, and catching up on Breaking Bad.  I am so glad I put in the effort.

Below, I thought it would be best to show my weekly television schedule.

Sunday: Downton Abbey, Once Upon a Time, Walking Dead, Mad Men
Monday: How I Met Your Mother, Two Broke Girls
Tuesday: Glee, New Girl, Parenthood, Sons of Anarchy
Wednesday: Modern Family, Revenge
Thursday: Vampire Diaries, Community, Parks and Recreation, the Office, 30 Rock
Friday: Fringe, Chuck
Saturday: Saturday Night Live

I plan on writing a couple times a week about the episodes, please feel free to join in my analysis and speculation.

I hope you enjoy!
